This is one of my favorite genre's of music, so it warrants its own category heading. Not all of these will be compete transcriptions, but I will include enough so that if you ever have the opportunity to jam these songs you'll be able to pull it off convincingly
Back when Soul Jazz was popular, they actually released edited version of album tracks as singles . There were 2 singles released off of this album. From a bass line perspective I didn't hear anything different between the 6 1/2 minute album version and the single. In typical Soul Jazz ( or Acid Jazz as it is also know) the artist re-worked a previously released hit song. This one happens to be a Dianna Ross and the Supreme's song.
Purdie and Rainey are reunited on this Soul Jazz Classic from the great organist Jimmy McGriff. This is some of the funkiest soul-jazz you will ever hear. You are familiar with this rhythm section from classic Aretha Franklin "Rock Steady" and Steely Dan "Kid Charlemagne" among others. It's not really possible to capture all the nuances of Chuck's bass playing on this track in midi, so make sure you listen to the track to get a feel for all the slides.
I was first Introduced to this thinking it was released on the album Afro-desia. I'm a big Dr. Lonnie Smith Soul Jazz fan. Add in Ron Carter and George Benson and you have the makings of a Soul Jazz Classic. As I'm transcribing this, my spider senses are telling me this isn't Ron Carter. So I start googling and find out that this was originally released on the 1977 album Funk Reaction, with drum roll please - Bob Babbit (the legendary Motown Bassist) on bass. If you look on Apple music this song is on Afro-desia. The Funk Reaction Album is listed as Gotcha/Funk Reaction and does not contain the song.
From the Allmusic review - " This is what Latin soul is all about when it meets jazz. The improvisations are in the pocket, but, at the same time, off the page" Plus the legendary Ron Carter is playing Bass on this track.
